As San Diego braces for a gusty Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) informs locals with an advisory detailing expected wind speeds and a slight chance of showers. NWS San Diego anticipates peak wind gusts today of 45 to 55 mph, with possible isolated gusts reaching up to 65 mph. Alongside the wind, temperatures are on the cooler side, with coastal areas feeling high between 61 and 64 degrees and inland valleys seeing a slightly warmer range of 57 to 68 degrees.
Looking forward to Wednesday, things are set to warm up a bit. The NWS forecast shows coastal areas can expect temperatures ranging from 64 to 69 degrees, while the high desert will see warmer conditions with 65 to 70 degrees. The low desert is predicted to top out at a warmer 72 to 82 degrees, indicating a brief reprieve from today's lower temperatures. However, the winds are not taking any breaks as San Diego's mountain areas and the desert should prepare for strong and gusty conditions, continuing into Wednesday morning.
The Area Forecast Discussion by the National Weather Service in San Diego notes that Tuesday will likely be the coolest day of the week due to a trough of low pressure moving across the Pacific Northwest. This weather change brings the possibility of drizzle for coastal and valley regions. Ensemble guidance shows a 40 to 60 percent chance of seeing at least 0.10 inches of rain on coastal mountain slopes, with a less significant chance of 20 to 40 percent for accumulations exceeding 0.20 inches in the same area.
For aviation interests, conditions are watched closely as strong winds stir up challenging flying conditions. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect across the outer coastal waters until late Tuesday night, "with sustained winds of 15 to 20 kt and gusts to 25 kt" particularly near San Clemente Island, according to the Area Forecast Discussion. Inland, the BKN low clouds will likely stay broken in San Diego County throughout Tuesday afternoon, affecting visibility. On the marine side, the NWS warns of strong west-northwest winds continuing through Tuesday, which may impact smaller watercraft, with the advisory in effect until Tuesday night.
The NWS has also activated a Wind Advisory for several regions, including Riverside County Mountains and San Bernardino County Mountains, lasting until early Wednesday. Expected strong winds over the mountains and into the deserts are highlighted as warnings for residents and travelers. While the winds are set to weaken by Wednesday and temperatures will start to climb, the regional weather service reminds locals to remain prepared for the gusty conditions shaking up San Diego County.
