San Francisco's dining landscape is poised for a refresh at the iconic Balboa Park, where a void left by the former Village Grill is about to be filled with new flavors. The City of San Diego has bet on local culinary entrepreneurs Jeff Motch and Clea Hantman, known for their ventures Panama 66 and Blind Lady Ale House, to transform the space into a fast-casual dining hotspot. According to the City of San Diego, their proposal won among various submissions solicited by the City in October 2024.
The former grill, which shut down in 2017, is set to have a complete makeover under the guidance of these restaurateurs. Their selection was not random; having established a reputation within the San Diego Museum of Art, they have a proven track record. "We are excited to work with Jeff and Clea to develop an eatery that best serves the park and its visitors," Christina Bibler, the City's Economic Development Director, said, per the City of San Diego. The process involves lease negotiations and adhering to the historical park's design standards, requiring a meticulous yet creative approach to honor the park's heritage.
It's not just about filling stomachs – the aim is to create a place for people to gather, aligning with what Motch and Hantman have achieved in their other dining establishments. This effort aligns with the City's broader strategy to keep Balboa Park an active cultural and recreational hub. Park enthusiasts have seen revitalization efforts before, with the reopening of the Botanical Building after a $26.45 million overhaul and the advancement of discussions with Save Starlight to revive the Starlight Bowl.
