The National Weather Service in San Francisco has issued a heat advisory in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM Friday, covering the Interior Bay Area and Central Coast, as the region braces for hazardous heat and increased fire weather concerns; alongside this advisory, dense fog warnings are in place for coastal areas and Monterey Bay, projecting visibility to be less than one half mile at times, according to the NWS San Francisco.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments, and avoid extended periods under the sun, heat safety tips shared by the NWS emphasize drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors if possible, and if outdoors, wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, a hat, and sunscreen, ensuring that no pets or young children are left in unattended vehicles as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes. An elevated fire weather threat is also in effect through Saturday, with dry and windy conditions posing a significant risk. The advisories are pushed with the reminder, "only you can prevent wildfires." Lower humidity levels and higher temperatures, specifically in elevated areas and valleys, contribute to the heightened fire weather risks, as the National Weather Service states.
Looking ahead, the heat risk is expected to abate with cooler weather on Sunday and more seasonal temperatures arriving next week, a welcome change following periods of 10 to 20 degrees above normal temperature spikes. Satellite imagery this morning showcasing the marine layer hugging the coastline suggests that low clouds should clear to make way for the climbing temperatures by mid- to late morning today, as per the NWS San Francisco.
Aviation concerns center around potential IFR-LIFR CIGs early this morning along the coast and inland Bay Area, with low confidence in stratus reaching certain areas like the Livermore and San Jose airports, at the Monterey Bay terminals, foggy conditions persist but will lift to VFR by afternoon with winds picking up, slightly easing overnight; the maritime community is also on alert with a Small Craft Advisory in place into Saturday due to gusty northwest winds over the coastal waters.
