The San José Police Department has launched a homicide investigation, marking the city's ninth such case this year, following the death of a male assault victim. The initial incident, as reported by SJPD's official news release, occurred on Sunday, when at around 5:38 AM, police responded to a call about an individual discovered unconscious and bleeding on the 100 Block of Old Tully Road.
Officers arrived on the scene to find the victim with visible assault injuries and immediately rushed him to a local hospital. Initially, the victim's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening. The suspect, identified as Eugene Pickett, a 28-year-old San José resident, was apprehended and quickly thereafter faced charges including robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse.
Tragically, the situation escalated on Tuesday when the SJPD received the devastating news that the victim had succumbed to his injuries. Following this development, a new arrest warrant for murder was then served to Pickett, who was already in custody at the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
The motive remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing, as detectives continue to piece together the full circumstances leading up to this fatal encounter. The victim's identity will be disclosed by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office at a later time.
