The event, set for Saturday, May 31, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, will be held at the Richey Training Center in San Jose, at 155 W. Hedding St.
This donor drive isn't just any community service project; it's a lifeline for kids like Kenji Lam, a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare condition requiring a stem cell transplant. For Kenji and many others in his situation, finding a matching donor could mean the difference between life and death. Although joining the marrow registry is described as simple and painless, a quick cheek swab is all it takes, the impact could be profound. The drive welcomes individuals ages 18 to 40, particularly from diverse backgrounds, to maximize the chance of finding compatible donors.
Recruit Ken Koltermann weighed in on the significance of this event. "This is more than a swab. It's a chance to be someone's hero," Koltermann told the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. The recruits are pushing for a great turnout, understanding the harsh reality that only 30% of patients find a match within their own family, leaving many dependent on the generosity of strangers. The cadets of Academy Class #34 are embracing the role of change-makers, extending their duties beyond public safety and into personal health crusaders.
