An urgent search is in progress near Roosevelt Island as FDNY and NYPD teams comb the East River for a missing 15-year-old girl. According to NBC New York, the search began after a distressing call came through to first responders at approximately 12:15 p.m. Initially handled by FDNY divers who were unable to locate the girl, NYPD's harbor units have now taken over the efforts to find her.
As the situation develops, Rainey Park in Astoria is the scene where a young girl is believed to have entered the water and not resurfaced. Her friend reported the incident by calling 911, leading to the arrival of emergency teams. The girl’s backpack was found abandoned by the riverside, containing a book titled “The Forest Demands Its Due,” as shown in New York Daily News imagery.
As time passes, the operation has shifted from rescue to recovery. Officials have been working continuously since the incident, with divers continuing to search the East River into the early afternoon for the missing teenager.
The full circumstances that led the girl into the river have not been confirmed. The search remains ongoing as officials continue their efforts.
