Addressing community concerns and advocating for the safety of all, Seattle Police Department's Chief Shon F. Barnes has publicly reaffirmed the department's commitment to inclusivity, especially regarding Denny Blaine Park – known for being an LGBTQIA+ space and nude beach. Chief Barnes has emphasized the importance of understanding historical interactions between law enforcement and marginalized communities. This statement follows discussions about the policing methods at the park that seeks to strike a balance between public safety and sensitivity to community needs. The message was conveyed through a recent statement issued by the SPD.
In this statement, the SPD reiterates their stance that nudity in itself at Denny Blaine Park is not criminal, but behavior that crosses into the realm of illegal indecency will not be tolerated. Chief Barnes underscored the need "to always reevaluate our actions in hopes to learn from them" and to responsively meet the benchmarks set by varied community demands. These pronouncements come as a response to the need to carefully balance the law enforcement presence in areas that have a complex history with the police.
The Seattle community had voiced opinions that safety within the park should not come at the expense of those who have historically been marginalized. "Every person in the park should feel safe," Barnes stated on SPD, echoing the sentiments of both park users and nearby residents. Acknowledging these concerns, the SPD has pledged to listen actively and respond effectively to any calls for service they receive, aiming to find equitable solutions for the community.
Going forward, the department plans to reevaluate how patrols are utilized in the park to ensure effectively they are providing safety for all. This strategy involves responding adequately to calls regarding indecent or lewd behavior while upholding laws non-prejudicially. "It’s a balance that we obsessively strive for," Barnes expressed in the statement from the SPD. This ongoing commitment by the Seattle Police Department remains a core part of their effort to foster an environment where trust and safety are paramount for every city inhabitant and visitor.
