A program initiated by Former SCSO Detective Sergeant Lynn Breeden in 2014 was upheld with the placement of flags at these officers' gravesites - a silent salute to their lasting impact. The proceeding unfolded recently, leading up to National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Gravesides throughout the county now host the colors of remembrance thanks to the efforts of the dedicated officials and community members who came together for this reverent occasion. According to a social media post by the Sevierville Police Department, SPD Deputy Chief Sam Hinson expressed gratitude for the chance to recognize these individuals, stating, "These men and women chose to dedicate themselves to protecting and serving our communities and we will be forever grateful."
The act of remembrance not only marked the individual sacrifice of each officer but also served as a larger symbol of the collective commitment to service embodied by those in law enforcement. To support the ongoing tribute, a fund - the Smoky Mountain Police Memorial Fund - has been established to sustain the purchase of these graveside flags and to facilitate additional support services. Contributions are being accepted at any Tennessee State Bank Branch.
