Recent body camera footage released by the Clark County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) has ignited a contentious debate over a deputy-involved stabbing of a DUI suspect in custody. The incident, taking place on May 7th, ended fatally with the suspect, Marc Fogle, from Clackamas, Oregon, sustaining multiple stab wounds. Local reporting from KOIN showed the video of the interaction between Fogle and Deputy Bryson Layton, who has been with the CCSO since 2023 and is currently assigned to patrol.
The footage revealed the moments leading up to the stabbing, depicting an initially calm scenario that ultimately escalated to violence. Fogle, at one point in the video, expressed feelings of hopelessness regarding his arrest, stating, "I'm a dead man, you're talking to a dead man." His remarks seem to hint at suicidal ideation, a context reported by KGW. Despite this, the situation deteriorated as Fogle's behavior turned threatening, prompting Deputy Layton to attempt to recuff him.
As the confrontation got physical, Fogle allegedly moved towards Deputy Layton's belt, and in the ensuing altercation, the bodycam was deactivated. When the video resumes, Fogle has already been fatally stabbed. The circumstances of how the camera was turned off during this critical moment remain unclear, as reported by KATU. The CCSO declined to comment on the matter due to the active investigation. EMS was summoned shortly after the deputy noted the fight over the radio, but Fogle was pronounced dead at the scene.
