South Shore businesses are on high alert after a recent spate of burglaries has hit the neighborhood, specifically on the 2100 block of E. 71st St. Within the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District, these incidents have seen unknown individuals forcibly entering businesses, stealing property and then fleeing the scene on foot, according to a business alert from the Chicago Police Department.

The burglaries occurred between late March and early May, with the first being reported between 5:30 p.m. on March 28 and 8:30 a.m. on March 31. Another break-in happened at midnight on May 2, and the most recent was between 5:00 p.m. on May 2 and 8:00 a.m. on May 5. While the police haven't pinpointed the offender or offenders, they are turning to the community for assistance with staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities.

In each burglary, the perpetrators appeared to gain access by breaching a door to gain entry into the businesses before absconding with various properties. The Chicago Police offer several tips to business owners to mitigate further instances: illuminating the property perimeter, keeping doors and windows secured, fixing any security weaknesses like broken windows or locks, and saving surveillance footage.
