Early this morning, in a stirring display of unity, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) teamed up with Special Olympics Utah and the Salt Lake City Police Department to kick off the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, a heartening stride toward inclusivity and community engagement. The event, celebrated with a press conference, signified more than just a race. It stood as a testament to the camaraderie and respect fostered between law enforcement and the athletes of Special Olympics Utah; it's about the shared experiences and stories that endure, enriching the fabric of the community.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Torch Run garners special affection from officers statewide, reflecting an unwavering commitment to support, which, through their actions, we see not only their dedication to protect but also to uplift those they serve. Among those representing DPS were Major Salas from the Utah Highway Patrol and Bill Newell from both the Statewide Information and Analysis Center (SIAC) and State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), their presence signifying a department-wide solidarity with Special Olympics Utah’s mission.
Commendation for this ongoing partnership also comes from the department's top brass, with DPS Commissioner Jess L. Anderson, a board member for Special Olympics Utah, expressing his staunch advocacy.
