In a coordinated operation, the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), led by Lt. Jaime Bruno, conducted a raid Tuesday morning at an apartment on the 0-100 block of Belmont Avenue. The operation was supported by the Massachusetts State Police VFAS and the Hampden County Sheriff's Department. The raid followed months of investigation and community complaints.
According to the Springfield Police Department website, the target of the investigation was Rafael Aviles, a 44-year-old resident of Northampton. Acting on a search warrant obtained through surveillance and evidence gathering, officers entered the apartment and arrested Aviles without incident. Inside, they recovered approximately 22 grams of powder and crack cocaine, 15 bags of heroin, nearly $2,000 in cash, a loaded firearm, and ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were reportedly not registered to Aviles.
Aviles faces multiple charges, including trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine, and several firearm-related offenses, including improper storage and possession without a license.
Authorities indicated that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow.
