Commuters in St. Louis should take note of the rush-hour obstacles they’ll face due to an array of roadworks scheduled from today through Wednesday. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is reshaping roadways and refurbishing bridges, meaning traffic will inevitably bear the brunt of these improvements.
Notably, starting tomorrow evening, I-64 will see lane shifts onto the eastbound Boone Bridge, with westbound lanes being rerouted to make way for a painting job on the westbound truss. "This lane shift will create a large enough work area to allow MoDOT's contractor to begin repainting of the westbound truss," according to MoDOT's advisory. As if the work on I-64 isn’t enough to make you rethink your commute, Route AC over Maline Creek is another trouble spot to watch out for, as crews close lanes to switch traffic for resurfacing work and sidewalk replacements—a project that’s not expected to wrap up until December.
Drivers will also encounter significant ongoing closures, such as a southbound lane on I-55 from I-44 to Weber and multiple ramp closures throughout the city lasting through mid-May or even into 2025. For those looking for real-time traffic updates, MoDOT suggests heading to their Gateway Guide or checking out their traveler map for immediate roadway conditions, though all plans are subject to the whims of the weather and could change accordingly.
The traffic disruptions aren't limited to daytime hours, either. Night owls will need to navigate closures like the one on I-55 in Jefferson County, where an overnight southbound lane will shutter daily. "Motorists should be aware of the following ongoing closures," MoDOT warns, listing an extensive litany of shutdowns on I-270, Route 67 and Route 141, and confirming that the southbound Route 67 to southbound I-55 will be blocked off until September 2025, among others.
For those hoping the weekend might offer some respite, Saturday will see the closure of the eastbound and westbound exits to Walnut and Broadway on I-64 in St. Louis City early in the morning. Although Sunday provides a brief intermission from construction, Monday will bring closures as several eastbound lanes on the Poplar Street Bridge are closed. The rest of the workweek will follow a typical pattern of lane shutdowns and detours across multiple counties, as construction continues.
