The City of Surprise is stepping up efforts to combat the health risks of Arizona's heat. Several locations within the city will serve as Heat Relief Stations from Thursday through September 30, providing life-saving hydration and a cool refuge to those who find themselves scorched by the desert heat.
Four designated cool-down spots, including the Surprise Resource Center and three libraries, have opened their doors as part of the Heat Relief Network, a collective initiative aiming to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths through a web of service providers and community efforts. While the effort is commendable, not everyone can easily access these oases of escape from the relentless Arizona sun, though they are vital during a time when even a few minutes outside can be risky for anyone.
For those seeking these lifesaving amenities, the official City of Surprise announcement lists the following locations as part of the network: Surprise Resource Center at 12425 W. Bell Rd, Hollyhock Library at 15844 N. Hollyhock St., Surprise Regional Library at 16089 N. Bullard Ave., and Asante Library at 16755 W. Vereda Solana Dr.
The Maricopa Association of Governments offers an interactive map featuring over 200 locations countywide where people can duck out of the heat. What's crucial, aside from knowing where to get relief, is recognizing when it is needed by knowing the signs and symptoms of heat illnesses, which range from heat cramps to life-threatening heat strokes, according to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
In addition to seeking shade and established cool zones, staying heat safe in the face of climbing temperatures involves practical measures. The City of Surprise urges residents to stay hydrated by drinking water before thirst kicks in, and for those working up a sweat, the inclusion of electrolyte-rich drinks to replenish salts and minerals is advised, along with wearing breathable, light-colored clothing and utilizing air conditioning at every chance.
