The standoff at Li'l Abner Mobile Home Park in Sweetwater intensified as today's eviction deadline loomed over its inhabitants. Despite the deadline, some residents are still refusing to leave their homes. "I don't care what they say. Unless a judge rules not in our favor and kicks us out of here, we're not leaving," one homeowner defiantly told NBC6.

What had been their haven for decades is now under threat by the plans of CREI Holdings, which intends to replace the mobile home community with new housing developments. As demolition of empty trailers begins, other residents, like Juan Adam Rodriguez who’s been there since the 1970s, express uncertainty and despair at the prospect of displacement. "I got no place to go! I got no roof, nothing. My friend, too, he lives with his mom, who is 82 years old mom," Rodriguez asserted in an interview with 7News

Some residents, who’ve called the park home for the better part of their lives, received legal assurance to hold their ground. "Because I have here in my phone a message from the lawyer that says we don’t have to move from here," relayed Vivian Hernandez, a 35-year veteran of the park, to a Spanish-speaking reporter from 7News. The lawsuit accuses Miami-Dade County and the landlord of not following suitable procedures, including failing to provide adequate relocation options for those evicted.

Financial compensations were extended by the park owner, with thousands of dollars offered in incentives to vacate early. However, money does not always pave a practical path forward for those with limited options, as voices of resistance rise above the hum of demolition. The specter of being removed by force looms as a last resort, a resident was told and later shared with NBC6, "Of course, of course I'm staying."
