The Tampa Police Department is stepping up patrols ahead of Memorial Day weekend with the launch of Operation Zero Proof, aimed at deterring impaired driving and boating as residents and visitors gear up for the holiday, according to an announcement from the department shared on their official website.
Starting today, additional officers will be on the lookout for signs of driving or boating under the influence, this measure is a bid to prevent accidents and injuries during a weekend that traditionally sees a surge in recreational activities, Chief Lee Bercaw underscored the dual nature of the weekend as a period for both commemoration and celebration in a statement obtained by the official Tampa government website, "We can never forget that Memorial Day weekend is a time for us to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country and our freedoms," while also pointing out, "While the extended weekend provides us added time to enjoy our family and friends, we urge everyone to remember the reason for this holiday weekend and make responsible choices to keep our community safe."
Last year's Memorial Day enforcement efforts resulted in 40 DUI arrests and this year's initiative hopes to bring that number down to zero, highlighting the department's commitment to preventing impaired driving or boating incidents entirely. Boaters and drivers are being encouraged to use designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation as alternatives to ensure a safe return home after festivities.
