In the quiet of early Sunday morning, a life was cut short in the parking lot of Kearns High School. An apparent robbery attempt resulted in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy, casting a gloomy shadow over the community. The incident, which police are investigating as a homicide, occurred around 1:50 a.m. at 5525 S. Cougar Ln., Unified Police Sergeant Melody Cutler reported, as per KUTV.
Details from the investigation revealed a confrontation turned violent when two armed individuals emerged from a vehicle, according to Cutler's account, as obtained by KSL. "Two people get out of that car and they both have guns," she said. The intended victim, an 18-year-old male, attempted to escape the threat by retrieving his firearm from his car's trunk. In the ensuing chaos, guns were drawn, and shots were fired. It was then, amidst his escape, that the 18-year-old shot the 17-year-old assailant.
The shooter subsequently sought out authorities, signaling for help nearby. He was cooperative with police once they arrived on the scene, police officials stated. As of now, no names of those involved have been released to the public. No charges had been filed at the time the authorities last offered updates on the case, as reported by KSL Newsradio.
