A tragic shooting in the Orange Mound area of Memphis has claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and left an 18-year-old man with serious injuries. According to Action News 5, the incident occurred late Saturday night on Airways Boulevard near Brooklyn Avenue.
The Memphis Police Department responded to the emergency just after 11:50 p.m., discovering both victims in critical condition. Despite efforts to save them, the young woman succumbed to her injuries. Local Memphis, in their coverage of the incident, notes that the victims were transported to Regional One Health, where the girl was declared dead. The Local Memphis report also affirms that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and encourages anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
This shooting marks one of two deadly incidents in Orange Mound within hours of each other, highlighting a night of violence in the community. A separate shooting on Park Avenue at Josephine Street, approximately two hours earlier, resulted in a man's death. This streak of violence follows the tragic incident last month, where a two-year-old was shot and killed in the same vicinity. Reverend Reginald Tucker, reflecting on the recent surge in violence, told FOX13 Memphis, "We just had a recent shoot on Josephine where a two-year-old just got killed. So we know just one thing about it. We got to start really depending on God and let God fight our battles instead of us taking everything so dramatic in our hands."
The Memphis Police Department is encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to step forward and assist in the investigation. As the community grapples with this loss, the call for an end to the cycle of violence grows stronger. Those with information can reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously and help in getting to the bottom of these tragic events.
