A 17-year-old has been arrested in the wake of a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a young boy at a park in Compton, as reported by multiple outlets. On Friday afternoon, a 12-year-old boy, later identified as Rodrigo Emiliano Martinez by loved ones, was shot at Fig/Oleander Park and died from his injuries at a local hospital. KTLA reported that the incident occurred just before 4:00 p.m. in the 2100 block of Oris Street.
Following the incident, authorities engaged in a pursuit with the suspected shooter, who managed to elude capture until Sunday. In a statement obtained by FOX 11, The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed the arrest of the teenager, however, pursuit with the suspect led to their arrest occurred the day after the shooting. Images captured by SkyFOX showed the park roped off by crime scene tape on Friday. According to a FOX 11 report, Martinez was known to be a student at Davis Middle School and an avid soccer player. In response to the tragic event, a GoFundMe page was launched to support the family of Martinez, with details available through the same report from FOX 11.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed due to their minor status, fled the scene on foot following the shooting. He was later taken into custody and is currently being held on suspicion of murder. CBS Los Angeles mentioned that while investigating, authorities were able to "positively identify the subject" leading to the teenager's arrest.
Details regarding the motive or circumstances that led to the shooting are still unclear, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department withholding specifics about the evidence that led to the identification of the suspect. Neighbors alluded to potential gang involvement in interviews with FOX 11, but family members staunchly denied that Martinez was involved in any gang activity. Claimed by the family, they emphasized that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The fatal shooting at Compton playground was not relayed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. NBC Los Angeles added that law enforcement is continuing its investigation into the incident and urges those with information to get in touch with the LASD’s Homicide Bureau or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
