Chicago once again faced the harrowing rhythm of gunfire near a high school campus, as three teenagers became targets on the city's Near West Side. In an incident that unfolded at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Friday, the victims, all students of Chicago Bulls College Prep, stood on a sidewalk when the attack erupted, CBS News Chicago reports.

The shots rang out on the 200 block of South Hoyne Avenue, just a block away from the educational institution. A 16-year-old boy was struck in the lower back and, according to Chicago Sun-Times, remains in serious condition. The other two victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, received injuries to their legs but were listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital.

While the school had let out an hour prior to the shooting, the proximity has rattled the community, further straining the fragile boundary between educational sanctuaries and city streets marred by violence. "We are heartbroken to confirm that three of our Bulls College Prep students were injured in a shooting that occurred off campus," a Noble spokesperson reflected, in a statement obtained by CBS News Chicago.

No arrests have been made, and the area was cordoned off with police tape, as detectives from Area 3 continue their investigation. "We are working closely with local authorities as they investigate the incident," as stated by CBS News Chicago.
