With the Biden administration's crackdown on so-called "junk fees," Ticketmaster has announced a significant change to its pricing display, promising transparency for consumers as they initiate their hunt for live event tickets. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the new rule by the Federal Trade Commission, which went into effect Monday, mandates ticket sellers like Ticketmaster to reveal all additional fees upfront, a move aimed at eliminating the surprise charges that often tail end the ticket purchasing process.
Michael Wichser, Ticketmaster Chief Operating Officer, noted in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times that the company "has long advocated for all-in pricing to become the nationwide standard," promising that consumers will benefit from the ability to compare prices more efficiently across different sites, Ticketmaster also disclosed that it would keep customers informed about their place in line when purchasing tickets and provide updates for waits exceeding 30 minutes, detailing ticket prices, availability, and potential new event dates.
With roughly 70% of major U.S. concert venues' tickets being distributed through their system, Ticketmaster's adoption of these new transparency practices stands to influence the market substantially as reported by the Associated Press. This move also aligns North American practices with global norms where full prices have typically been provided at the inception of the shopping experience. Another ticket selling platform, SeatGeek has followed suit, making all-in pricing the default setting for its customers.
This overhaul follows a tumultuous period for Ticketmaster that includes a site crash during a Taylor Swift ticket presale in 2022 and an ongoing lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice, accusing the company and its owner Live Nation of creating an illegal monopoly that purportedly inflates ticket prices, President Donald Trump has also taken an interest in the sector, having signed an executive order that ostensibly aims to curb ticket scalping and introducing "commonsense" changes, enforcing price transparency through the FTC's efforts, in an effort that was applauded by musician Kid Rock, who made an appearance during the signing of the Trump's executive order in the Oval Office.
