A tragic occurrence unfolded yesterday evening in Hollywood, as a vehicular accident at around 5:40 p.m. led to a car engulfed in flames, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The collision occurred at the intersection of Sheridan Street and North 40th Avenue when a pickup truck collided with another vehicle, causing it to crash into the wall of a private residential community and burst into flames, NBC Miami reports.
Responding to the fiery crash, Hollywood Police officers closed off the intersection in all directions, disrupting the usual flow of Hollywood's traffic. Local 10 captured cellphone footage showing bystanders rushing toward the inferno in an attempt to rescue the occupants, as stated by Lily Pishik, a nearby resident who heard the impact and called 911, saying, "I heard the fire start. I was like, ‘Oh, another crash,’ and then I saw a huge fire."
As officers from the Hollywood Police Department's Traffic Homicide Unit began their investigation into the cause of the crash, the area remained sealed off, impacting residents and commuters alike. NBC Miami noted that this incident is part of a worrying trend in South Florida, marking it as the fifth vehicle fire-related fatality in the region this year. The previous incidents have led to four deaths in such fiery crashes—three in Broward and one in Miami-Dade County prior to this latest event.
Multiple individuals were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital from the scene for medical attention. However, the full extent of their conditions, hit by the crash, has yet to be divulged by authorities, according to Local 10. The disruption also caused damage to a nearby traffic signal, which contributed to further complications in the area, as power to the traffic infrastructure was temporarily lost causing parts of the intersection to shut down by Hollywood police.
