An off-roading incident in El Paso County's locale of Red Sands claimed the life of a 19-year-old man early Sunday morning, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office has reported. According to KFOX-TV, deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash at approximately 5 a.m. on Montana Avenue, where they discovered the 19-year-old victim, Eduardo Salas, deceased at the scene after being struck by a white SUV engaged in off-roading activities.
The tragic accident took place at 15600 Montana Ave, and KFOX-TV indicated that preliminary findings suggested that the driver of the SUV may have lost control while navigating the terrain, leading to this fatal encounter, KVIA stated that the crash was reported at 4:58 a.m. and that the Sheriff's Office has deployed Special Traffic Investigators to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the event, the outcomes of which remain pending.
The Sheriff's Office, while having notified Salas' next of kin, has yet to comment on the causes that led to the crash; however, in response to the incident and the popularity of the Red Sands area for outdoor enthusiasts, El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte publicly emphasized the importance of safety, "With warmer weather ahead, we know Red Sands will continue to draw large crowds," Ugarte said, as per KTSM, "We want everyone to enjoy the area responsibly, look out for one another, drive safely and help us prevent further tragedies."
