Just days beyond the mandated deadline for residents to leave Sweetwater's Li'l Abner Mobile Home Park, a trailer was engulfed in flames last night. The fire department received a call around 11:15 p.m. and was quick to arrive at the scene, where firefighters worked diligently to subdue the fierce inferno that had taken hold of what seemed to be an abandoned trailer, reported WSVN.
The mobile home park has been the battleground of a significant dispute between tenants and the landowner, where eviction notices served last November had given over 900 residents until Monday to vacate, as NBC6 detailed, and just after the eviction deadline a fire broke out, and it's not the first time as this park has seen such fires before. CREI Holdings, the owner of the park, plans to develop the property anew and has offered displaced residents financial incentives to leave early, but some 200 residents have defied the order, staying put in their homes amid ongoing negotiations and a class-action lawsuit.
As the aftermath of the fire is assessed, there have been no reported injuries and the cause remains under investigation. This incident has further agitated an already tense situation in Li'l Abner Mobile Home Park, where tension has mounted following the efforts to clear the land for new development. The reality of displacement hangs heavy on residents like Enrique Zelaya, who expressed his distress in an NBC6 interview, saying, "I don't know where I'm gonna go live you know, I got no place to live."
The future of the Li'l Abner mobile home park remains uncertain as new housing development is planned in the area. Residents, including Zelaya, have expressed concern about possible displacement, though the management company has not confirmed whether more evictions will occur. While some view the redevelopment as a sign of progress, current tenants fear the potential loss of their homes and community.
