Two Hickory High School students were struck by a car at a busy intersection in Catawba County yesterday afternoon, as confirmed by the Hickory Police Department. The incident occurred while they were attempting to cross 2nd Street NE at the intersection of 13th Ave NE, an area with a high volume of traffic. According to police reports, the pedestrian signal was displaying the 'do not walk' sign at the time the two juveniles, both aged 15, were hit by a Chevrolet traveling at 45 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Following the accident, paramedics rushed the students to a local hospital. One of them was subsequently treated and released, while the other remains hospitalized in stable condition. Hickory High School has responded to the crisis, stating, "The safety and well-being of our students are always our top priority," in a statement obtained by QC News. The school has emphasized the importance of discussing safety protocol for crossing busy streets with the students and is working closely with law enforcement on the investigation.
The driver, identified as 20-year-old Avianna Damia Danner, was charged for speeding and for not having a valid driver’s license, reported by WBTV. This underscores the ongoing concerns over traffic safety in the area, especially considering the proximity of the school at the corner of Third Street Northeast and 12th Avenue Northeast, near to a major highway.
In the aftermath, the school is offering support to students impacted by the collision. "School counselors were available," noted WSOCTV, highlighting the educational institution’s efforts to help its student body navigate this traumatic event. The intersection near Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s on Second Street NE is an commonly traversed by students due to the high school's location, meaning preventative measures and awareness remain critical.
This is an ongoing investigation and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward and contact the Hickory Police Department at 828-328-5551.
