Chaos erupted aboard a southbound MARTA train on Sunday afternoon when a gunman opened fire, wounding two individuals in an attempted robbery. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, the shooting occurred around 4:24 p.m. as the train neared the East Point station. Major Timothy Maddox of the MARTA Police stated in the report that one victim was shot in the chest and required surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, while the second suffered a graze wound to the neck and was treated on the scene.
Witnesses aboard the train described the immediate shock and confusion. Mary Carson, a passenger who recorded the aftermath, told FOX 5 Atlanta, "We heard three gunshots and everybody just jumped on the floor." She and her boyfriend, Harrison Blackwell, reported seeing one of the victims on the ground following the gunfire and expressed their distress over not knowing if the shooter was targeting others.
An update from Atlanta News First noted that the shooter had grabbed items from the victims' bags before firing, but left the items behind as they fled the scene. MARTA Police have since collaborated with East Point Police in an active manhunt, though a suspect description has not been made public at this time.
