After 35 years of fostering academic growth and development in Southern Utah, Steven Hawks has decided to close his chapter as a professor and campus leader at Utah State University, Moab. Joining the university's faculty in 1991, Hawks spent a substantial span of his career nurturing the minds of students, earning accolades not only for his instructional prowess but also for his leadership in times of economic strain. "The best part of my career has been the ability to live and work in my hometown," Hawks said, as per USU Today.
Hawks has worn many hats throughout his tenure at USU, having served as a leader at USU’s Moab campus and other regional locations. Known for his dedication to students' education and well-being, Hawks also took on the significant task of helping the region prosper during challenging economic times. He contributed profoundly to the statewide educational structure being in its current state. Notably, Hawks was in the frontline during the merger of USU with the College of Eastern Utah, which underscored his commitment to educational progress in the region.
His journey in academia was marked by not only leadership roles but also continuous contributions to the field of public health. Hawks played a key part in developing the Master of Public Health program at USU. "His passion has always been students and providing them the highest quality education available," remarked Ken White, senior vice president of Statewide Enterprise, as reported by USU Today. USU Moab is today lauded for its green initiatives and broad educational offerings, ranging from Nursing and Elementary Education to advanced technical programs, all of which have flourished under the guidance of leaders such as Hawks.
