The Georgia Department of Corrections recently announced a significant shift in leadership at Wheeler Correctional Facility. Vashti Brown, the current Superintendent at Appling Integrated Treatment Facility, has been tapped to take over as the new Regional Operations Coordinator at Wheeler CF starting on Sunday. In her upcoming role, Brown will oversee the facility’s adherence to contractual obligations, with particular emphasis on maintaining standards of sanitation, safety, and security. In a statement obtained by the Georgia Department of Corrections, Commissioner Tyrone Oliver expressed his confidence in Brown's capabilities, "Vashti has proven herself to be an effective leader throughout her nineteen-year career with the department. We look forward to seeing her excel as she takes on her new role at Wheeler CF."
Bringing a resume that spans almost two decades, Brown's career in corrections started in 2006 at Telfair State Prison/Milan Unit. Having served as Secretary I and later promoted to a Secretary II with Care and Treatment, Brown's experience and leadership skills were honed through various roles, including Counselor and Chief Counselor at Telfair State Prison. Having the facility continuously focused on safety, her appointment comes as a strategic move by the Georgia Department of Corrections to bolster operations at Wheeler CF. She eventually climbed to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Smith State Prison in 2018, followed by her promotion to Superintendent at Appling Integrated Treatment Facility in 2021, as detailed by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Educationally, Brown holds an associate degree in general studies with a minor in sociology from Georgia Military College, and furthered her studies with a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. Her professional development is complemented by a variety of training programs and academies in counseling, supervision, management, and correctional officer training that she has completed over the years, including the Deputy Wardens Academy and Warden’s Pre-Command.
Having served in her current position since 2021, as Superintendent at Appling Integrated Treatment Facility, Brown's comprehensive background in counseling and management positions her well to monitor Wheeler CF's operations.
