A dramatic scene unfolded in West Valley City, Utah, where 27-year-old Joseph Anthony Kingston was indicted on a federal carjacking charge after a brazen escape attempt that led him to allegedly commandeer a landscaping truck with the worker still inside. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the indictment was handed down following an incident on April 30, in which Kingston is said to have used a knife to coerce the victim to drive him out of an area cordoned off by the police.
On that day, police officers answered a call to remove Kingston from a local residence, but a records check revealed he had an active felony warrant and was restricted from possessing a weapon. Upon their arrival, officers witnessed Kingston fleeing on foot. Despite a thorough search by drone and K9 units, Kingston initially eluded capture in the containment area. In a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office, roughly 20 minutes after the search was shut down, authorities received a call from an adult male alleging that Kingston had hidden in his work truck and forced him to drive away from the scene.
The accusatory narrative continued with details of how Kingston remained hidden until they had passed beyond the police cordon. The victim, who has not been named in reports, was ultimately able to safely exit the situation. Later that day, a foot pursuit ensued, after which Kingston was apprehended by the West Valley City Police Officers. At the time of his capture, he was allegedly found in possession of the items he is accused of stealing from the victim's truck.
Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti announced that Kingston's first court appearance on the indictment occurred today at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse. Tied into the broader initiative known as Operation Take Back America, this case zeroes in on violent offenses and underscores a collaborative enforcement strategy.
