Following a brief interruption caused by a sewage discharge, Winton Lake has been declared open for visitors and outdoor enthusiasts just in time for the Memorial Day holiday. Great Parks of Hamilton County announced the green light last Saturday, reinstating popular activities like canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. However, swimming has always been and remains prohibited in these waters.

Last Tuesday, an unwelcome spill on the northern side of Winton Lake near the Winton Woods campground forced officials at Hamilton County Public Health and Great Parks to suspend all recreational activities. FOX19 reported that the situation was deemed "concerning," prompting immediate action to safeguard public health and the environment.

In the days following the incident, the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) of Greater Cincinnati confirmed that it had successfully stopped the sewage discharge. According to WLWT, subsequent water quality tests indicated that E. coli levels and other contaminants were below state and US EPA-recommended thresholds, a testament to the rapid response and the resilience of natural water systems.

After the containment of the contamination source, Hamilton County Public Health Commissioner Greg Kesterman lifted his previous recommendation to avoid the lake, citing test results that found E. coli levels to be below both state and federal standards. The affirmation by Kesterman was made following the analysis of water samples and, observing health and safety protocols, declared in a statement obtained by The Enquirer that the waters were now fit for public enjoyment.
