A deputy-involved shooting in Deerfield Beach has resulted in the death of a woman and left one deputy injured, the Broward Sheriff's Office reported. The incident took place near the 1900 block of Northeast Second Street yesterday evening. According to Local10, the woman was carrying a firearm inside a restaurant in the area before being confronted by deputies.

The confrontation escalated when, as WSVN reported, the woman presented a threat to the officers, prompting multiple shots to be fired by three deputies. The nature of the threat has not been specifically detailed by authorities. The scene was chaotic, with bystanders seeking cover as the situation unfolded. "They basically- they were ducking down. Everybody was running for cover," witness Bobby Prendergase told WSVN.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony addressed the incident, emphasizing the protocols of engagement for his deputies. “It doesn’t require an individual to fire at us in order for us to engage them. Weapons presentation, pointing at my deputies, or posing a threat to this community is enough for my deputies to engage these threats and put them down. Not only within policies, protocols and procedures, or our use of force continual, but also my expectations. We cannot afford to lose people out here in the public,” Sheriff Tony stated, as noted by WSVN.

One deputy was injured during the incident, but it’s currently unclear how the injury occurred. The deputy was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is reported to be doing well. No other injuries have been reported. The investigation will be further bolstered by various forms of evidence. “We’ll have to look at every single aspect from the camera system that are in the restaurants, our body-worn cameras and any type of other witness statements or evidence that can help -- that can, you know, help solidify the facts behind the case,” Sheriff Tony mentioned to Local10.

As it stands, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation of the shooting. Details are still emerging as investigators work to piece together the events that led to this fatal shooting. With the woman pronounced dead at the scene, authorities are seeking to clarify whether gunfire was exchanged with the victim.
