A 12-year-old boy, identified as Ja'nylen Greggs by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, was fatally shot during a gunfire exchange between two groups at an apartment complex in southwest Atlanta. The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday, according to authorities.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that the child was hit by gunfire when one group opened fire from a blue vehicle while retreating. Despite efforts by Grady EMS and treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital, Greggs died from his injuries, . Another person was slightly injured while trying to flee but did not require hospitalization.

A neighbor and certified medical assistant described the aftermath to WSB-TV, saying the child was found unresponsive on a couch. "When I got in the apartment, the baby was on the couch, his eyes were open, and he was unresponsive," the neighbor said, noting that the child was not involved in the incident.

Police have not released details about suspects or the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
