An 8-year-old girl was hospitalized after an apparent road rage incident escalated into gunfire in Chicago's Douglas neighborhood on Tuesday evening. According to Chicago Sun-Times, the child was riding with her family when an argument unfolded between them and the occupants of a white SUV on the 3000 block of South State Street, around 9:50 p.m.
The confrontation quickly turned violent when a man in the white SUV threatened and then proceeded to shoot, striking the girl in her thigh. Despite the chaos and severity of the situation, the girl's condition was listed as fair after she was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, as reported by the police and confirmed by the Sun-Times.
As the details of the shooting continue to surface, authorities have not yet apprehended the suspect. Details about the tan SUV carrying the girl, left marked by bullet holes, and the subsequent discovery of shell casings on the street were detailed by CBS News Chicago, painting a harsh reminder of the incident's violence.
The Chicago Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward, as they are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The shooter, after committing the act, was reported to have driven off, evading capture. Families in Chicago continue to fall prey to a cycle of violence that nonchalantly turns children into victims. According to CBS News Chicago, the girl was in "good condition", even amidst the troubling circumstances that led to her injury.
