An encounter between the Austin Police Department (APD) and a suspect in North Austin escalated into a hazardous confrontation, resulting in an injured bystander and the suspect being shot. The incident unfolded after APD officers attempted to intercept a vehicle reported stolen, which then led to a chase, according to a briefing from APD Chief Lisa Davis this morning, as reported by CBS Austin.

During the pursuit, the suspect's desperate attempt to evade capture led to a collision with another civilian's car, causing it to spin out on W. Anderson Ln. and N. Lamar., rendering, back pain to its occupant, who later sought medical attention. The intense chase culminated when the suspect fired at the approaching officers. "Officers returned fire, striking the suspect in the clavicle," said Davis. "The bullet went through and exited out," as she detailed the confrontation's conclusion in which the suspect was subdued and then taken to tzhe hospital for treatment. Their identity has yet to be disclosed, according to CBS Austin.

A statement from Gail McCant, APD's Director of Police Oversight. "We are very fortunate tonight that we are not reporting on an officer being shot or an officer being killed," reported KXAN. This relief was reflected in Davis' earlier statement regarding the officers involved, "acted very bravely in the situation where they’re being fired upon, and they took action."

This incident is the third officer-involved shooting by APD last month. The investigation is currently in its preliminary stages, with APD examining the sequence of events leading to the shooting. The inquiry will review the suspect’s actions, motives, and the officers’ conduct as part of the ongoing assessment.
