In a Spanish-language interview with journalist Yancen Pujols, Marte shared the unsettling details, saying, “A fan was up on the dugout shouting things about my mother,” as reported by ABC15.
Shaken by the experience, Marte recounted that while he's become accustomed to the regular heckling that comes with the territory of professional sports, he had never before experienced someone targeting his late mother, Elpidia Valdez, who tragically died in a car accident in 2017. The confrontation struck a deeper chord as it occurred in the same city where his mother passed away. Following this event, Major League Baseball took swift action, handing down an indefinite ban to the 22-year-old fan from all stadiums, the next day.
Marte's response to the incident was one of both pain and forgiveness, emphasizing the need for better conduct from fans at games. “We have to do something about the fans; they’re going too far,” Marte expressed in a statement obtained by ABC15.
Despite the hurtful nature of the comments, Marte offered a sentiment of compassion towards the individual responsible for the heckling, reflecting a desire for understanding rather than retaliation. “We're praying for him, for the guy who shouted, and for his family, you know? May God protect him. May God protect him and cleanse his heart,” Marte told AP News.
