An Arizona woman, staying at the luxurious Breakers Palm Beach, was ensnared by her own act of theft after hotel security discovered a stolen bottle of perfume tucked away under her couch. According to CBS12, the Palm Beach Police Department was called to the scene on Monday, following a retail theft report at the Guerlain Store within the hotel. They were promptly provided with video footage that captured the suspect, identified as Laura Rasmussen-Pleshar, engaging in the act.
The surveillance video showed Rasmussen-Pleshar entering the upmarket store, handling a bottle of Vanille Perfume estimated at $630, and proceeding to abruptly conceal the item as the clerk attended to another matter. Prior to the incident, Rasmussen-Pleshar had already visited the store on the same day, dropping $407 on merchandise that was to find its way to her Arizona home. Police officers reported to the woman's hotel room to confront her, only to have her admit to the theft.
In a statement, authorities say Rasmussen-Pleshar retrieved the fragrance from beneath her couch, willingly handing it over to them. This incident quickly translated into criminal charges, listed by the Palm Beach arrest reports. The Palm Beach Mugshots listed Rasmussen-Pleshar's offense as petit theft, formally characterized under statute 812.014 2F (MF) LARC - petty theft of merchandise, with the value ranging between $100-$750.
While the statute itself denotes a comparatively minor offense, the broader implications are anything but negligible. Despite the misstep, all accused individuals carry the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law, a cornerstone principle of the American legal system, as underscored by the disclaimer from Palm Beach Mugshots. These reports aim solely to inform the public of local incidents without intent to bully or harass those who find themselves entangled within the criminal justice system.
