Nineteen-year-old Malachi Chaney is publicly thanking those who have supported him after surviving an EF-2 tornado that hit Henry County late last month. According to 11Alive, Malachi was thrown nearly 100 yards from his home during the storm and suffered multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured facial bone, and a punctured lung.
As per FOX 5 Atlanta, he is currently recovering at a rehabilitation center in Atlanta.
The tornado caused severe damage to the Chaney family’s home, leaving it completely destroyed. Malachi’s father, Tray Chaney—an actor known for his role on HBO’s The Wire—also sustained injuries but has since recovered. Malachi spent time in the ICU at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he turned 19 and underwent facial surgery.
Support for Malachi has come from family, friends, and public figures, including a message from NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who offered encouragement during his recovery.
Amid the destruction, a surprising discovery offered a small sign of hope: Malachi’s high school diploma was found 11 miles away from the family’s home. Tray Chaney said that although they lost their home and belongings, the family's survival is what matters most.
The Chaney family is currently staying with relatives while Malachi continues to recover. A GoFundMe fundraising has been organized to help cover emergency expenses and support the rebuilding of their lives.
