The National Weather Service in San Francisco urges Bay Area residents to exercise caution today and tomorrow due to elevated fire weather conditions. According to the NWS forecast, interior regions like the East Bay, eastern Santa Clara Hills, and the Gabilan Range are at an increased risk for fast-spreading grass fires, fueled by wind gusts reaching 25 to 40 mph and afternoon humidity levels dropping to 15-25 percent. The NWS advises the public to secure tow chains, extinguish cigarette butts properly, and be vigilant with open flames to prevent any ignitions.
In tandem with the fire warning, maritime conditions are expected to be hazardous over the coming days. Gale-force winds, with gusts up to 40 knots, are likely to create difficult and dangerous conditions for mariners navigating coastal waters. Residents and visitors in affected areas are advised to know the latest forecasts and warnings to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, Bay Area weather sees a trend of cooler temperatures, staying 5-10 degrees below normal for this time of year, says the Area Forecast Discussion by the National Weather Service. A deepening upper-level low brings gusty onshore winds and cooler air, with isolated gusts in the 40s and 50s observed. "Elevated interior eastern hillsides will lead to elevated fire weather concerns," the NWS warns, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance in these areas.
The risk of fire weather conditions is not expected to recede until later in the weekend, with gusty winds gradually easing. Despite this, the National Weather Service notes, "Plenty of uncertainty remains in the synoptic pattern for the beginning of next week and beyond until models get a handle on the evolution of the large dome of high pressure across the eastern half of the country." Mariners should also prepare for tough sailing conditions persisting through the weekend, with the NWS issuing advisories and gale warnings for multiple zones along the coast.
