The City of Bloomington has notably been celebrated for its environmental transparency and climate action, securing a coveted spot on the global A-List of the nonprofit CDP. Bloomington's high 'A' score was disclosed in an announcement on the city's official website, marking it as one of only 112 cities globally to achieve such a distinction in 2024.
With a consistent push to actively reduce its environmental footprint, Bloomington is now in the leadership vanguard, owing to the city's strategy to transparently report and aggressively to tackle climate change. "We are grateful for all of the City departments, residents, businesses and nonprofits that are working together to make climate action a reality every day in Bloomington," said Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability for the City's Economic and Sustainable Development Department, according to an official statement on the city's website. Miya's words underline the collaborative spirit powering Bloomington's drive towards sustainability.
The prestige of an A-List status underscores the commitment of cities not simply to create, but to implement a precise and measurable action plan for the climate. This plan includes detailed city-wide emissions inventories, climate risk and vulnerability assessments, and, importantly, a strategic climate action roadmap that is accessible to the public. Bloomington's endeavors showcase the critical role local governments play in innovating climate solutions, stimulating infrastructure enhancement, and fostering economic growth aligned with environmental stewardship.
"Congratulations to Bloomington for earning a spot on CDP's A-List," Katie Walsh, head of climate finance for cities, states and regions and North American lead of CDP, expressed in a statement celebrating the city's achievement. Walsh recognized Bloomington's initiative to holistically integrate climate resiliency and sustainability into urban policies as a leading example for others. Such groundbreaking work can rally stronger local economies, catalyze job creation, and, crucially, attract much-needed funding to further bolster resilient communities well into the future.
Participation in the CDP-ICLEI Track climate reporting platform is pivotal for A-List cities like Bloomington, providing a key framework to methodically track their ecological impact, engage residents in sustainability efforts, and unlock avenues for the financing required to accelerate the implementation of climate initiatives.
