Residents in parts of New Orleans East are being advised to boil their water before use, following an advisory from the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. The precautionary measure was prompted by a temporary loss of water pressure due to a valve failure on Chatelain Drive. According to WDSU, the pressure drop lasted for nearly five minutes and the water pressure has since been restored.
The boil water advisory affects specific boundaries that include, Hayne Boulevard from Paris Road to Read Boulevard, Paris Road from Hayne Boulevard to the I-10 Service Road, I-10 Service Road from Paris Road to Read Boulevard, and Read Boulevard from the I-10 Service Road to Hayne Boulevard. As per an announcement by the Sewerage and Water Board, as WWLTV reports, residents in the affected areas should boil their water for at least one full minute before consumption or use in food preparation.
The S&WB, in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health, issued the precautionary boil water advisory to ensure safety due to potential contamination risks. The areas outlined for the advisory are typically issued a notice like this when water pressure falls below the safety threshold, which can allow contaminants to enter the water supply. Experts recommend using boiled or bottled water especially for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.
As the integrity of the water supply remains in question, officials at S&WB are carrying out tests for possible contaminants, a common protocol in such events. In an update to residents, utilities authorities have communicated that another notification will be dispatched once the boil order is, lifted. This information was confirmed by FOX 8 Live, which specified the areas included in the boil water advisory along with details regarding the valve failure that initiated the advisory.
