A Palm Beach County man has been sentenced to 90 months in federal prison after being convicted for illegal firearm possession. Tyreek J. Clermont, a 24-year-old resident of Boynton Beach, will then serve three years of supervised release, as announced by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O'Byrne for the Southern District of Florida.
On a seemingly routine traffic stop last October, Martin County Sheriff's Office Deputy pulled over Clermont's vehicle. As reported by the Department of Justice, upon approaching the car, the deputy noticed that the defendant was smoking a marijuana cigarette. A search of his vehicle unveiled not only a loaded firearm but also a digital scale and drugs, including marijuana and the synthetic stimulant dimethylpentylone.
Clermont, who has previous convictions for robbery, gun, and drug crimes, pleaded guilty to the firearm charge earlier this year. Under federal law, individuals with a felony record are forbidden from possessing a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce—a rule that Clermont flouted. His sentencing contributes to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, a collaborative effort aimed at reducing violent crime in communities, according to the same press release.
The investigation leading up to Clermont's sentencing was a joint effort by the ATF Miami Field Office and the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Porter took on the prosecution of case.
