
In a move that brings a seasoned military leader to the forefront of Arizona’s emergency and defense operations, Governor Katie Hobbs has appointed Brigadier General John Conley as The Adjutant General and Director of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA). With vast experience that spans over three decades, Conley steps into a role that is vital to both the wellbeing of Arizonans and the security interests of the state. According to an official announcement on the Governor’s website, Conley's extensive military service is poised to enrich the leadership of the state's defense and emergency management.
Conley, a Brigadier General who has spent the last 14 years serving in various positions within the Arizona National Guard, has been trusted with overseeing operations of the state's Army and Air National Guard, along with other key facets like Emergency Management and Administrative Services. Governor Hobbs, confident in her selection, noted "Brigadier General Conley is a distinguished leader, accomplished lawyer, and dedicated public servant, and I’m proud to appoint him to this position." As reported by Governor's office, his prior experience is expected to ensure the continuity and success of initiatives like Task Force SAFE, which combats the infiltration of illegal substances across the border.
Brigadier General Conley expressed his gratitude for the appointment and his readiness to further the mission of DEMA, as he told the Governor's office, "I’m honored that Governor Hobbs has selected me to lead the Arizona National Guard and Department of Emergency and Military Affairs." His previous role as Director of Administrative Services for DEMA saw him manage key operational aspects such as personnel, finance, and mission support for entities under his charge. With extensive legal expertise as both the Staff Judge Advocate for the Arizona Air National Guard and State Judge Advocate for the Arizona National Guard, he comes highly prepared for the multifaceted challenges of his new post.
Conley also brings to the table significant legal credentials from his civilian life where, focusing on commercial litigation and employment law in the healthcare industry, he represented various healthcare professionals and organizations. Earning a B.S. from Northeastern University and a J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law, his academic endeavors have solidly backed his professional pursuits.
