Broward County has been the stage for a contentious exchange between Sheriff Gregory Tony and the State Attorney's Office. Sheriff Tony fervently defended three of his deputies, calling their aggravated battery charges a "miscarriage of justice" during a recent news conference. According to CBS News Miami, Sgt. Zakiyyah Polk, Deputy Denia Walker, and Deputy Cleopatra Johnnie face charges stemming from an incident involving inmate Samantha Caputo, who was booked for DUI and later accused of biting and assaulting the deputies. Tony emphasized that the deputies were "in compliance with our rules and regulations," as he put it, and accused prosecutors of succumbing to political pressures.
The incident, which took place on October 4, 2022, escalated when Caputo was told to change into jail clothing, leading to a verbal argument and subsequent physical altercation. As obtained by NBC Miami, Sheriff Tony claimed Caputo became combative, at which point deputies used force as they were taught to in their training. Tony went as far as to release video footage of the incident, including a moment where Caputo appears to throw her bra at the deputies, which he narrated during the conference. "You don't get a free pass to strike, injure, hurt or harm any of my goddamn deputies in this agency. None of them," Tony stated.
In a detailed response, State Attorney Harold Pryor expressed disappointment with Sheriff Tony's speculative comments on public corruption and has requested a written account of these allegations. Pryor's statement, shared by CBS News Miami, delineates the office's disappointment and insists that the pursuit of justice will remain untainted by the controversial claims, reaffirming that charges are based on evidence and not public or media discourse.
While an internal affairs investigation has already led to the reinstatement of the charged deputies, with the Broward Sheriff's Office covering their legal fees, the outcome of the situation remains to be settled in court. Tony is adamant that the charges be dropped, standing firmly by his deputies by saying, "These women were handcuffed, arrested, and their reputations have been destroyed," according to NBC Miami.
