The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced that it will be continuing its decommissioning efforts at the retired Bull Run plant this coming Saturday. According to the city's official announcement, safe implosions are scheduled for sunrise and again around midday on Saturday to bring down two tall stacks and parts of the plant structure.
Traffic adjustments will be necessary to prioritize safety during these activities. State Route 170 between Melton Lake Drive and Old Emory Road is expected to be closed for approximately 30 minutes during each implosion. Not surprisingly, the nearby Claxton Community Park and Ballfields will also be off-limits, starting from 5 PM on the Friday before.
Noise levels could spike as the structures meet their engineered end. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to expect brief but loud episodes when the stacks collapse. This advice extends to care for one's pets and those who might be jarred by the sudden disturbance. The TVA has prepared engineering controls and adopted best industry practices, aiming to limit dust fallout; however, it's probable that the surrounding air might get a little murkier, albeit temporarily.
Conditions could shift, and weather or extraneous variables may impose delays. Communications from the TVA will keep the public informed as the events unfold. "Our team is working closely with TVA and local, state, and federal partners to ensure this work is completed safely and with minimal impact to the community," stated the City of Oak Ridge. Patience and cooperation have been requested from the community as they witness the end of an era at the Bull Run plant.
