Residents in the Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods are on edge after a series of armed robberies, all reportedly committed by a single individual. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert detailing the crimes within the 11th (Harrison) District, urging the public to stay vigilant. According to the police report, the suspect involved in these incidents has approached victims while brandishing a black handgun and demanding their possessions.
The robberies have occurred in broad daylight, with multiple incidents last Thursday, and then again on June 8 and 10. Specific locations include the 4300 block of W. Washington Blvd., the 4400 block of W. Monroe, and the 0-100 block of S. Kilbourn, among others. Workers at job sites have been targeted, with one victim also losing their vehicle to the thief. The suspect is described as a Black male, 16-25 years old, 5'7"- 6'1", weighing between 140-150 lbs., and with a dark complexion, he's seen wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt with a white design, black pants, white & black gym shoes, and a black surgical mask.
In response to the alarming situation, authorities are appealing to the community for assistance in identifying the suspect. "Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.). Never pursue a fleeing assailant; provide the information to the police," the alert advises. Residents are also reminded to value their lives over any belongings and to contact law enforcement immediately at 9-1-1 after an incident, ensuring not to disturb the scene.
