Residents in the North Park and Irving Park neighborhoods are on edge after the Chicago Police Department issued a community alert concerning a series of motor vehicle burglaries and criminal damage. According to the department's notice, there have been multiple reports of power tools theft from parked work vans, as the unknown offenders saw through the locks and made their escape in a silver sedan.
The incidents, all occurred under the shroud of night or in the early morning hours of June 23, 2025, have been located across several blocks, with the 5700 and 5500 blocks of N. Christiana Ave., the 4300 block of N. Bernard Ave., the 3900 block of N. Richmond Ave., and the 3600 block of N. Whipple Ave. being targeted. The methodical precision of these crimes suggests a level of planning and coordination that plagues community members with concern for their property's security.
In a description released by police, the offenders were said to be three black men, dressed in dark clothing with their faces covered. Moreover, weapons are part of this dangerous equation – a witness reported seeing each of the offenders armed with a handgun, exacerbating the risk to locals during confrontations.
The Chicago Police Department is urging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could be related to these crimes. "Immediately report suspicious activity," the police advise, suggesting a collective eye could help deter further occurrences. Yet, in approaching a witness to the crime, the police recommend asking for contact information, but one should never chase after the assailants.
