Residents of South Shore are on high alert following a string of armed robberies reported in their neighborhood, as the Chicago Police Department's 4th District has issued a community alert warning citizens about the recent criminal activity. The suspects, described as 1-2 African American males around 18-20 years old and armed with distinctive handguns having drum style magazines, have been confronting and robbing unsuspecting victims before fleeing on foot.
The string of incidents began on June 17, with the latest occurrences happening over a span of four days; the thefts took place on the 8000 block of S. Kingston, the 7600 block of S. Colfax, and twice on the 7600 and 7800 blocks of S. Kingston, striking fear and concern in the heart of the community each robbery casting a long shadow over the safety once felt in these streets, all times were provided by the Chicago Police Department's official notice.
Officials have urged locals to maintain high levels of vigilance and report any odd behavior promptly to authorities; this recommendation comes amid increased scrutiny of public safety measures in neighborhoods like South Shore. In an effort to aid the police, residents are advised to note unique physical characteristics of potential assailants and to secure video surveillance footage, if available, in order to assist detectives working on these cases.
The CPD is also offering practical advice for those confronted by an assailant: remain calm and prioritize safety over the pursuit of the fleeing suspect, and in the unsettling event that one experiences, or witnesses, such an encounter they should not only try to remember any distinguishing marks such as scars, acne, or teeth but also collect contact information from any witnesses and call 9-1-1 immediately and, if possible, wait at the scene for the police to arrive. Community members are, furthermore, recommended to handle transactions in secure locations like police stations to lower their risk of falling victim to such crimes.
