A Chicopee woman is facing arson charges after authorities say she set a fire that ripped through a multi-family home, displacing its residents. The details, outlined in a news release from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, announce that Michelle Hall, 40, was arrested following a collaborative investigation. Chicopee's Fire and Police Departments teamed up with State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office, pinpointing Hall as the suspect in the blaze.
Hall was apprehended on Sunday evening, shortly after the fire devastated the residence at 26 Belcher Street. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 3:30 a.m. and had to fiercely combat the flames for over two hours before fully extinguishing them. According to a statement obtained by Mass.gov, "All residents were able to escape safely," and firefighters were able to successfully rescue two pets that morning; a third was retrieved later after being spotted by neighbors.
The investigation rapidly homed in on the second floor's bathroom, where the fire appeared to have originated. Further inquiry, amalgamating evidence from the scene, witness interviews, and additional leads, led officials to believe the act was intentional. "Based on evidence at the scene, witness interviews, and additional evidence, they determined that the fire had been intentionally set," was the conclusion shared in the official release.
Tensions had reportedly escalated into an altercation at the home earlier, which may have precipitated the arson. It is this connection that seemed to ultimately weave to implicate Hall in the crime. Now, at the behest of this evidence, Hall's case will be prosecuted by the Hampden County District Attorney’s office. Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski, Police Chief Patrick Major, and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine played crucial roles in the investigation, while the gravity of the incident has clearly underscored the importance of swift, responsive action from first responders in the Chicopee community.
