In what unfolded as a dangerous sequence of events on the I-80, California Highway Patrol officers were involved in a vehicular pursuit that led to a multi-car crash and the recovery of a firearm, the agency detailed in a recent report.
The incident kicked off near Ashby Avenue on I-80 westbound when CHP officers spotted a gray Nissan Altima without license plates last Saturday around 4:21 PM. The account provided by the CHP Oakland's social media post notes that after initially pulling over, the vehicle's driver abruptly sped off, veering back into the traffic and colliding with four other vehicles before fleeing on foot. Although the driver evaded capture, a 14-year-old passenger was detained at the scene.
Subsequent investigation by the officers led to the discovery of a loaded AK-style rifle on the driver-side floorboard. Checks indicated that the vehicle was stolen. As the investigation continues, the CHP has retained both the firearm and the vehicle.
