The Cincinnati Pride Parade and Festival, a renowned tradition for over half a century, marked its 52nd anniversary as throngs of people took to the city streets to celebrate LGBTQ community and rights. Temperatures soared, but that did not deter the masses from showing their support for the vibrant event.
Despite intense summer heat, the festivities kicked off with a parade commencing at Seventh and Plum Streets, winding down through Vine Street past Fountain Square and The Banks, concluding at Sawyer Point and Yeatman's Cove. This marked an important occasion for the Cincinnati LGBTQ community and its allies, who have annually demonstrated their resolve to stand together, as evidenced by the sizable turnout. FOX19 noted the event's kick-off time and the closing remarks for alcohol sales, while offering a logistical heads-up on street closures.
At this year's festival, the organizing team, led by Jake Hitch, made a principled stand by declining sponsorships from companies deemed insufficiently supportive of the LGBTQ cause year-round. "What that meant was that if an organization wasn't there to really be an ally to us January to December, then we were going to politely decline," Hitch told LOCAL12. The Pride team encouraged the community to step up their support to compensate for the lost sponsorships, and according to Hitch, their expectations were surpassed.
The festival was inclusive, providing spaces tailored for kids, seniors, history enthusiasts, and those in search of tranquility: a chill zone. "Especially what’s going on I think politically and just the country climate, inclusivity is really what it’s all about so we got to practice what we preach," said Hitch in a discussion with Spectrum News. Amidst ongoing political debates and the introduction of several anti-LGBTQ bills in Ohio and across the nation, unity and solidarity took center stage for the local LGBTQ community and its supporters.
Performance highlights included Big Freedia, who took the stage at 6 p.m., followed by Madison Rose at 5 p.m., providing an upbeat soundtrack to a day filled with camaraderie and celebration. Faces painted in rainbows, families of all varieties, and people of all ages participated in the festivities. This year's event was not only a display of festivity but also a testament to the ability of a community to band together and stand strong in the face of adversity.
